2008-10-15 14:39:58Bhujbal declares end of 'enmity' with Thackeray
NAT71National/PoliticsBhujbal declares end of 'enmity' with ThackerayMumbai, Oct 15 IANS Senior Nationalist Congress Party NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, on his 61st birthday Wednesday, declared that his "personal enmity" with Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray is "over" and that henceforth, any opposition to his one-time mentor would be at the political level.Speaking at a rally at Shivaji Park here organised by the NCP to felicitate him on his birthday, Bhujbal's remark comes close on the heels of his decision last week to withdraw an 11-year-old private defamation complaint filed against Thackeray. He also scotched all speculation that he was a fence-sitter in the NCP, particularly after his name was dragged in the fake stamp paper scam a few years ago. "There will always be differences among people in all parties, but I will never leave the NCP. I shall always protect the party's interests like a lion," asserted Bhujbal, who is also the state PWD minister. Bhujbal recounted his humble beginnings in Mumbai, living in a 10 feet by 10 feet tin tenement without basic amenities like water, electricity and a toilet, selling vegetables for a living, to occupying the seat of city mayor and deputy chief minister. He said that over the years he has learnt about the plight of the poor in the country, particularly the deprived Other Backward Castes OBC to which he belongs. He pointed out that while India is progressing on all fronts, social ills like casteism continued to confront the country. Demanding job reservations in the private sector, Bhujbal said it was sad that some people were of the view that the move would result hamper the work culture and quality. He admitted that he wouldn't have been able to do much for the backward classes had he not left the Shiv Sena to join the Congress and later the NCP. Earlier, a galaxy of leaders from different political parties paid rich tributes to Bhujbal. The political bigwigs who attended the function include Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil, union cabinet ministers Sharad Pawar, Praful Patel, Sushilkumar Shinde, BJP national general secretary Gopinath Munde, Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh and Republican Party of India president Ramdas Athawale. --Indo-Asian News Serviceqn/mv/vm400 Words15102236

2008-10-15 13:08:07Russia, Georgia trade barbs, but talks to resume Lead
INT68International/Diplomacy/DefenceRussia, Georgia trade barbs, but talks to resume LeadGeneva, Oct 15 DPA Russia and Georgia are to resume talks Nov 18 following the suspension in Geneva Wednesday of their first direct parleys since they went to war in August, European Union EU Special Representative for Georgia Pierre Morel told journalists.Russia and Georgia accused each other of walking out of the UN-brokered talks. "De facto the discussion was broken off by Georgia, which refused to participate in the plenary session," Interfax quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin, who headed the Russian delegation to the Geneva talks, as saying. "The behaviour of the Georgian side, to put it mildly, is unclear, as their refusal of participation has broken further schedule of work for today," Karasin said. "The beginning is difficult in this important process, but there is no reason to despair." Speaking to journalists in Brussels, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said Russia was to blame for the collapse of Wednesday's talks. "Although Georgia was very constructive, although there was an opportunity to hold serious talks with the mediation of the EU and the US, the Russians - as I feared and as I suspected - left the negotiations and walked out," Saakashvili said. "This is exactly how the Soviet Union acted in the worst years of the Cold War. This is very regrettable," he said. "We will continue working with our friends, with our partners; we will continue our consistent struggle for Georgia's de-occupation and for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the occupied territories." The Russian delegation arrived an hour late for the talks with representatives from Georgia, the US, the EU and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe OSCE. The closed meeting also included leaders of the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in an effort to find a long-term solution for stability in the region. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for patience, saying diplomats expected no immediate results and that the discussions could drag on for weeks. Russia and Georgia waged a five-day war when Russia invaded South Ossetia in response to Georgian efforts to impose its rule there.--DPAskp/vm389 Words15102233
